Best Practices
Recommended patterns for integrating with the Discord Labs API
1. Environment Variables
Never hardcode API keys. Always use environment variables:
Shell
# .env.localLABS_API_KEY=sk_live_xxxxxxxxxxxxx
2. Implement Retry Logic
Use exponential backoff for transient failures:
JavaScript
1async function makeRequestWithRetry(url, options, maxRetries = 3) {2 for (let i = 0; i < maxRetries; i++) {3 try {4 return await fetch(url, options);5 } catch (error) {6 if (i === maxRetries - 1) throw error;7 const delay = Math.pow(2, i) * 1000; // exponential backoff8 await new Promise(r => setTimeout(r, delay));9 }10 }11}
3. Monitor Rate Limits
Track rate limit headers to avoid hitting limits:
JavaScript
1const remaining = response.headers.get('X-RateLimit-Remaining');2const resetTime = response.headers.get('X-RateLimit-Reset');34if (remaining < 10) {5 console.warn('Approaching rate limit');6}
4. Cache When Possible
Cache responses to minimize API calls and improve performance.
5. Use Meaningful User-Agent
Include a User-Agent header to identify your application:
JavaScript
headers: {'User-Agent': 'MyBot/1.0.0'}
Recommended telemetry headers
- • X-SDK-Name — SDK or client name
- • X-SDK-Version — SDK version
- • X-SDK-Lang — language/runtime
- • X-SDK-Instance-Id — anonymous instance id
6. Batch Operations
Combine multiple operations when possible to reduce API calls.
7. Log and Monitor
Log API errors and monitor for unusual activity in your dashboard.
8. Security
Warning
- Keep API keys private and rotate regularly
- Use HTTPS for all requests
- Validate webhook signatures
- Never log sensitive data
- Implement proper CORS policies
